Important Stuff

Regrettably the club has had to postpone
this meeting due to circumstances beyond our control.
We had invited some council members to
attend to discuss the activities of the BMX club and the impact that it
will have on our track and riding facilities. Unfortunately they can not
attend on that night.
Stay tuned and we will let you know as
soon as we can secure these members and the council chambers.
This is to take
place on March 8 2010
The venue will be
decided shortly and will be posted here. Watch this place

We have a special

Be quick with this one. It sold out
real quick last year.
The Dual is once again on in 2010. This event sold out very quick last
year and from all reports it was a bigger success than the organisers
anticipated. Start preparing now for an event you will be talking about
for months long after the event is over.

Hear ye, Hear Ye.

Did you know? In
Squash, a “kill” is a shot that is hit firmly but travels no further
than half the court. Squash is competing with four other sports to be
included in the 2016 Olympics – a decision which will be announced in
October 2009.
You are all
invited to attend the annual MTBNZ Summit, happening August 14-16,
hosted by the Hawkes Bay MTB Club. This year the theme of the
summit is “Building a MTB Community”, a draft agenda is attached for
your comment and to get you all excited. If you
have some thoughts about what you would like to see as content,
please drop myself, Hilton (ezybike@hotmail.com)
or Helena (president@mtbnz.org.nz) an
email.
Historically 1 or 2
people from clubs have attended the annual AGM, this year will be
the first year that we host a true summit – we invite every
committee member of every affiliated MTB Club in New Zealand to
attend. By hearing
some of the great things happening for mtb in NZ, we hope the
summit will motivate and inspire your committee to get things really
happening in your town, suburb or city. Other
groups with an interest in mtb such as BikeNZ, mtb event promoters
and mtb tourist operators are also being invited to attend.
We
are hoping to keep the cost of the summit to the minimum, HBMTBC
will be seeking funding to cover conference expenses, at this stage
it’s likely participants will pay for travel and accommodation
(around $50/night) only. MTBNZ encourage clubs, where possible, to
financially support their committee members to attend the summit.
In following years it is envisaged that the hosting of the annual
summit will move around NZ.
The proposed venue
is Pukeora Estate, Vineyard, Winery & Venue, 208 Pukeora Scenic Rd,
RD1, Waipukurau. It is about an hour from either Napier or
Palmerston North airport (a shuttle will run to the conference).
The Hawkes Bay MTB Club has ongoing trail development in this area
and the conference will allow time to explore, so bring you bike!
At this stage we are looking to get a good idea of the numbers of
people that will attend, so that HBMTBC can seek funding and get
further into the organisation.
Please canvas your committee members and ask them to visit the
following website to complete a free and easy registration. A full
registration email will then follow.

Club reflects on
inaugural year.
Ref: Article from
Franklin Counties News
As the Franklin Mountain Bike club
completes it's first full year in existence it is preparing for a
big 2009 with track developments and scheduled events on the
horizon.
The club held a Christmas BBQ
at it's Puni track site on
Thursday evening,(11/12/08) where members took part in time trials
around the forest site, and played mountain bike soccer and put a
new twist on the 60's dance the 'Limbo'.
Committee member Chris Walkley said the club wanted to hold
an event that gets as many members and non members together as
possible.
The club is currently working through its insurance so it will be
able to host official riding events next year.
As work is completed on the nearby BMX track, they will also improve
their tracks in the forest area - so both are available for club
members, he said.
Mr Walkley said as the Puni track is often used every day by 5-10
people riding in groups or individually for recreation, the scope
and interest appears to be there for organized events.

Watch out. Bikes about

If any one has
been cruising the Zone One area of Pukekohe, (the area of the Warehouse)
may have noticed that there is what appears to be a new bike shop in
town or one that is under new management. You can't be blamed for
thinking that. But no! The Hedgehog Bikes shop is as of the
07 March 2010
now to be known as "239BiKE".
Same shop, same owners, same location just a new name. Will and his
lovely wife Ruth are still there to continue bringing to you the same
first class service and information that they have come to be known for.
Please continue to support Will. He supports your mountain bike club by
bringing you good deals every month.

On Sunday 29 June the Franklin
Mountain Bike Club and MWH Consultants planted 900 native plants in Puni
Reserve. Many of the plants are wetland specie and others suitable for
riparian planting. The planting took place along a section of ephemeral
stream. MWH funded the $2500 worth of plants. A big thanks to MWH for
the funding and those staff members (and partners) who drove to Franklin
on a Sunday morning to help.
The planting was a
very successful project. There was a great turnout of both local
volunteers and also volunteers from MWH. The back stream is now well
endowered with wet land plants which will be a great asset to both the
club and to the community. There is a rock feature in the middle of the
stream which hopefully become a central feature.

The Franklin Mountain
Bike Club is doing its bit for the environment.
The Club has secured $2500 of funding from MWH Limited for
native plants. These plants will be planted in the
ephemeral stream/waterway that runs through the back paddock
at Puni, behind the pines and near where the BMX track is
being built.
If anyone would like to come along, help with
planting and show Council and MWH that mountain bikers give
back to the community and the environment, then please come
along to help us plant this
Sunday 29/6/08 from
9am.
All this of course has got nothing to do with
that fact that the Club would like access to the back
paddock to extent our tracks.
This is the first of many things that your
committee has planned for you to enjoy.

Tuesday June 24: Many cyclists find Franklin District a fantastic place
to ride. While mountain bikers head for the Hunua Ranges, road cyclists
roam most parts of the District, when they are training, racing or just
going for a ride. The cyclists are also very aware that they are
sharing these roads with other users.
Two cycling organisations that organise events in Franklin
are Counties Manukau Cycling and Cycling Auckland. Counties
Manukau Cycling race in Franklin almost every weekend and Cycling
Auckland hold special races here as well.
When the clubs wanted to give something back to the
community, supporting safety messages about sharing the road seemed like
a great place to start.
The Clubs have generously donated six "Mind the Gap" signs
which are being put up alongside roads well used by cyclists in
Franklin.
Counties Manukau Cycling President, John Coker said, "we
are very aware that for cyclists to be able to share the roads of
Franklin with motorists requires considerate road use by both parties.
These signs serve as a reminder to both cyclists and motorists about
considerate behaviour."
The signs prompt drivers and cyclists alike to remember
that 1.5metres is a safe gap to leave.

Be advised that Twomey
contractors will be starting the earthworks for the new BMX track at
Puni this week.
There should be no disruption to our riding but try to keep a distance;
Tony T from the BMX club should be there whenever they are working so
there should be no Problems
