The track extensions continue

We had a great day on Saturday with the help of the whole committee and  two non club member volunteers Garth and Daniel.
Thanks for all the hard work put in the place is hardly recognisable, we could do with help making trail signs also.
We need someone who can wield an axe to remove roots from the trail that are starting to be exposed all along the trail.
We’d like people to ride the new trails as much as possible to bed them in before winter starts, but preferably not after a fresh rain as it will cut groves through the hardening top surface.
Some new area available to make some jumps. Let me know if you are interested.
Sorry about the return up trail ,it’s a bit bumpy and soft, we’ll finish it off with an excavator Saturday.

Regards Roger.

Trivia

Did you know? In Squash, a “kill” is a shot that is hit firmly but travels no further than half the court. Squash is competing with four other sports to be included in the 2016 Olympics – a decision which will be announced in October 2009.

Club reflects on inaugural year.
Ref: Article from Franklin Counties News

As the Franklin Mountain Bike club completes it's first full year in existence it is preparing for a big 2009 with track developments and scheduled events on the horizon.
The club held a Christmas BBQ at it's Puni track site on Thursday evening,(11/12/08) where members took part in time trials around the forest site, and played mountain bike soccer and put a new twist on the 60's dance the 'Limbo'.
Committee member Chris Walkley said the club wanted to hold an event that gets as many members and non members together as possible.
The club is currently working through its insurance so it will be able to host official riding events next year.
As work is completed on the nearby BMX track, they will also improve their tracks in the forest area - so both are available for club members, he said.
Mr Walkley said as the Puni track is often used every day by 5-10 people riding in groups or individually for recreation, the scope and interest appears to be there for organized events.

Breaking News

The Franklin Mountain Bike Club has done its bit for the environment.

On Sunday 29 June the Franklin Mountain Bike Club and MWH Consultants planted 900 native plants in Puni Reserve.  Many of the plants are wetland specie and others suitable for riparian planting.  The planting took place along a section of ephemeral stream.  MWH funded the $2500 worth of plants.  A big thanks to MWH for the funding and those staff members (and partners) who drove to Franklin on a Sunday morning to help.

The planting was a very successful project. There was a great turnout of both local volunteers and also volunteers from MWH. The back stream is now well endowered with wet land plants which will be a great asset to both the club and to the community. There is a rock feature in the middle of the stream which hopefully become a central feature.

The Franklin Mountain Bike Club is doing its bit for the environment.

The Club has secured $2500 of funding from MWH Limited for native plants.  These plants will be planted in the ephemeral stream/waterway that runs through the back paddock at Puni, behind the pines and near where the BMX track is being built.
If anyone would like to come along, help with planting and show Council and MWH that mountain bikers give back to the community and the environment, then please come along to help us plant this Sunday 29/6/08 from 9am.
All this of course has got nothing to do with that fact that the Club would like access to the back paddock to extent our tracks.
This is the first of many things that your committee has planned for you to enjoy.

Mind the gap signs for Franklin district

Tuesday June 24: Many cyclists find Franklin District a fantastic place to ride. While mountain bikers head for the Hunua Ranges, road cyclists roam most parts of the District, when they are training, racing or just going for a ride.  The cyclists are also very aware that they are sharing these roads with other users.
Two cycling organisations that organise events in Franklin are Counties Manukau Cycling and Cycling Auckland.  Counties Manukau Cycling race in Franklin almost every weekend and Cycling Auckland hold special races here as well.
When the clubs wanted to give something back to the community, supporting safety messages about sharing the road seemed like a great place to start.
The Clubs have generously donated six "Mind the Gap" signs which are being put up alongside roads well used by cyclists in Franklin.
Counties Manukau Cycling President, John Coker said, "we are very aware that for cyclists to be able to share the roads of Franklin with motorists requires considerate road use by both parties.  These signs serve as a reminder to both cyclists and motorists about considerate behaviour."
The signs prompt drivers and cyclists alike to remember that 1.5metres is a safe gap to leave.
