History

The Franklin Mountain  Bike Club Inc was formed officially on 4/2/2008.

It's roots go back to about 2003, when it was started unofficially by a few enthusiastic residents of Pukekohe. They had a vision of an alternative recreational activity for the area, they were young and keen. All with up and coming families. They wanted a cheap and healthy sporting activity that could be enjoyed by everyone both young and old and with the growing momentum of the mountain bike era it started to make sense to them that they were on the right road.
For people from the Franklin area to enjoy a growing sport they had to travel far and wide to enjoy it.

With this in mind their enthusiasm  got the better of them.  The first thing they had to do was find a suitable place to form a track.  The most obvious place to start, was to see if they could make use of a public reserve that was just becoming a rubbish dumping ground. They approached the Franklin District Council for help, in finding and establishing a place for a track. Permission was granted to use a small unused reserve in Puni. At this point a very sincere thanks to Franklin District Council for all the help and guidance they have afforded the club to date.

The property was surveyed by these enthusiasts and planning started. The reality and excitement of their vision was now spurring  them on.

With picks and shovels and rakes and spade and chain saws the work began. Many hours of back breaking labour was put into creating the track as it is today. As years have gone by manual labour has been generously given by individuals, even the congregation of a local church to help develop the track more and more. The district council could now see a real benefit from what had been achieved and as such contacts were made to get native trees and plants to help beautify the area. Native trees and shrubs were planted. Areas were mowed in preparation for adding a picnic area, extra smaller tracks were established for the more adventurous riders, like a small down hill track.
